Chinese Translation Services for Documents

Translate manuals, catalogs, contracts and websites into Chinese, with your terminology and formatting intact.

Markets: China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore Variants: Simplified (zh-CN), Traditional (zh-TW)

Who needs Chinese translation

Chinese has more native speakers than any other language, and it is the main written language in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, and one of Singapore’s official languages. For an exporter, it is rarely a single market. A manufacturer can sell machines into mainland China, components to a supplier in Taiwan and consumer goods through a distributor in Hong Kong, and each of them expects its own written form of the language.

Mainland China also expects Chinese on the product itself. National standards for consumer products generally require instructions and labels in Simplified Chinese, and distributors there usually ask for Chinese manuals, data sheets and safety information before they will list a product.

Typical documents

  • User manuals and installation guides, often with diagrams and numbered steps
  • Product catalogs and data sheets, where tables and part numbers must survive
  • Safety data sheets and compliance documents
  • Contracts, terms and conditions, and distributor agreements
  • Packaging and labels, where space is tight
  • Websites and software strings

Most of these are laid out in Word, PowerPoint or spreadsheets (InDesign on Pro). Taia keeps the layout, so you get back a Chinese file that looks like the original instead of a block of text to reformat.

Where Chinese translation goes wrong

The wrong script for the market. Simplified Chinese sent to Taiwan, or Traditional Chinese sent to the mainland, reads as written for someone else. Decide which markets each document is for before you order, and keep Simplified and Traditional as separate target languages.

Taiwan is not Hong Kong. Both use Traditional characters, but vocabulary differs, and Hong Kong writing is shaped by Cantonese and by English loanwords. If Hong Kong is a key market, say so in the style guide and have a linguist who knows it review the text.

Fonts and line breaks. Chinese needs fonts that contain the characters, and a PDF or an older system without them shows empty boxes or question marks. Chinese also has no spaces between words, so line breaks, hyphenation settings and text boxes from an English layout can behave in unexpected ways. Test the final file in the program your customers will use.

Brand and product names. Choosing a Chinese name for your brand is a business decision. The name can follow the sound, the meaning or both, and different translators will choose differently. Pick the name once, put it in the glossary, and use it everywhere.

How Taia handles Chinese

Upload your file (Taia reads 65+ formats on Pro), choose Chinese (Simplified) or Chinese (Traditional), and AI translation returns the file in minutes with the formatting in place. Customer content is never used to train AI models.

Consistency comes from three tools. A glossary fixes how your terms and names are translated in each variant. A style guide sets tone and register. Translation memory stores approved segments so later documents match. Glossary, style guide and translation memory are on Pro and Enterprise. Translation memory does not make AI translation cheaper. It keeps wording consistent, and on professional per-word work, matches are discounted.

When a document needs a human, someone on your own team can review it in Translation Studio on Pro, or you can order professional translation from a native linguist for the right variant.

Three ways to translate into Chinese

Pick one per document, or combine them. On Pro and Enterprise, the same glossary and translation memory sit behind all three, so your approved terms carry over whoever finishes the text.

AI translation

A formatted first draft in minutes, for internal documents or as the starting point for a reviewer. AI translation is part of a Taia subscription; see pricing for what each plan includes.

Your own team, in Translation Studio

If a colleague, a subsidiary or a distributor reads Chinese, invite them to your organization and assign them a task on the AI draft. They review it segment by segment in the Translation Editor, with translation memory matches, glossary terms and your style guide beside each sentence, then submit and deliver it. Translation Studio is on Pro and Enterprise.

Professional translation by Taia's linguists

When a contract, a safety sheet or a label has to be right and nobody on your team has the time or the language, order it from the same project. There are three levels:

Essential

from $0.07/word

AI translation post-edited by one professional linguist.

Enhanced

from $0.10/word

A translator and a reviser. This workflow follows ISO 17100.

Ultimate

from $0.14/word

Translation, Editing and Proofreading (TEP). This workflow follows ISO 17100.

Professional prices are list prices across languages. The exact price for Chinese and your file appears on the instant quote when you upload it.

Chinese translation turnaround

AI translation takes minutes, whatever the length of the file. When your own team reviews in Translation Studio, you can set a deadline on the task. For professional translation, the delivery date is shown on your instant quote before you order, so you know it before you commit.

Chinese translation: frequently asked questions

Should I translate into Simplified or Traditional Chinese?

It depends on where your readers are. Mainland China and Singapore use Simplified characters. Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau use Traditional characters. The two are written differently enough that readers notice at once, so choose by market, and order both if you sell in both.

Can I convert a Simplified Chinese translation into Traditional?

Only as a starting point. Many characters map one to one, but some don't, and vocabulary differs between the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong, including everyday technical words. A converted text often reads as written for another market. Translate into each variant, or have a native linguist review the converted version.

How do I translate a document into Chinese?

Upload your file to Taia, choose Chinese (Simplified) or Chinese (Traditional) as the target language, and the AI translation comes back in minutes with the original formatting kept. Simplified and Traditional Chinese are both available for AI translation on every plan, and Taia reads 65+ file formats on Pro. To have it checked, assign the review to someone on your team in Translation Studio (Pro), or order professional translation from the same project without re-uploading.

Is AI translation good enough for Chinese?

For internal documents and first drafts, often yes. For contracts, labels, safety information and marketing copy, where a term or a brand name has to be exactly right, order professional translation from a native linguist. If someone on your team or at your distributor reads Chinese, assign them the review in Translation Studio (Pro), with your chosen Chinese brand name already in the glossary. All three work in the same project.

How do I keep Chinese product terminology consistent?

Add your approved terms, including the Chinese name of your brand and products, to a Taia glossary, and set the register in a style guide. On Pro, the glossary keeps terms fixed for the Advanced and Premium AI engines and for your linguists, and translation memory stores approved segments so later documents match earlier ones. Glossary, style guide and translation memory are on Pro and Enterprise.

Who translates the professional Chinese work?

Native Chinese linguists from Taia's network of more than 2,000 vetted linguists, matched to the variant you order, Simplified or Traditional. The Enhanced and Ultimate workflows follow ISO 17100, with a second person reviewing the translator's work. You see the delivery date on the instant quote before you order, so you're not guessing about timing.
