Who needs Dutch translation
Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands, and one of the official languages of Belgium, where it is spoken in Flanders and in Brussels alongside French. It is also official in Suriname and in Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. The Netherlands is a major trading country and a gateway for many exporters into the European Union.
Dutch and Flemish buyers expect documentation in Dutch. EU product rules generally expect instructions, labels and safety information to be available in the official language of the country where the product is sold. A business that sells in both the Netherlands and Belgium should decide early whether one Dutch text is enough or whether each market needs its own.
Typical documents
- User manuals and installation guides, often with diagrams and numbered steps
- Product catalogs and data sheets, where tables and part numbers must survive
- Safety data sheets and compliance documents
- Contracts, terms and conditions, and tenders
- Packaging and labels, where space is tight
- Websites and software strings
Most of these are laid out in Word, PowerPoint or spreadsheets (InDesign on Pro). Taia keeps the layout, so you get back a Dutch file that looks like the original instead of a block of text to reformat.
Where Dutch translation goes wrong
Netherlands or Flanders. The Dutch of the Netherlands and the Flemish of Belgium share a standard language but differ in vocabulary, expressions and tone. Pick the variant for each market, and order it separately where the text is aimed at consumers.
Je or u. Dutch has an informal “je” and a formal “u”. Dutch business writing is informal by international standards, and many brands use “je” even to customers, while contracts, legal and public-sector texts use “u”. Decide the register once and write it in the style guide.
Compound words. Dutch writes compounds as one word (a “solar panel” is a “zonnepaneel”). Splitting them into separate words, as English does, is a common error and reads as unpolished. Terms in your glossary should be recorded in their correct compound form.
Articles and spelling details. Nouns take “de” or “het”, and the choice affects adjectives and pronouns, so fragments with variables need context. The digraph “ij” is capitalized as a unit (IJssel), a detail that automated tools often get wrong at the start of a sentence or a heading. Dutch text is also usually longer than English, so check labels and table columns in the final file.
How Taia handles Dutch
Upload your file (Taia reads 65+ formats on Pro), choose Dutch, and AI translation returns the file in minutes with the formatting in place. Customer content is never used to train AI models.
Consistency comes from three tools that work together. A glossary fixes how your product terms are translated. A style guide sets tone and address. Translation memory stores approved segments so related documents match. Glossary, style guide and translation memory are on Pro and Enterprise. Translation memory does not make AI translation cheaper. It keeps wording consistent, and on professional per-word work, matches are discounted.
When a document needs a human, someone on your own team can review it in Translation Studio on Pro, or you can order professional translation from a native Dutch linguist.
